Information
Airway management is an essential skill in the practice of emergency medicine. As technology advances and video laryngoscopy becomes increasingly prevalent, the ability to record intubation attempts and airway procedures has expanded. These recordings provide valuable opportunities to evaluate technique, identify errors, and enhance education for trainees.
A recent emergency medicine study, A Taxonomy of Key Performance Errors for Emergency Intubation (American Journal of Emergency Medicine, November 2023), identified common performance errors during endotracheal intubation in the emergency department. Subsequent work in other specialties has further characterized critical airway management errors. An increasing number of emergency medicine residency programs now use recorded airway videos to support education, refine procedural technique, and highlight nuanced aspects of airway management. Reviewing these recordings allows clinicians to learn from prior experiences and mitigate future errors.
In this session, speakers will review current evidence on intubation performance errors and engage the audience in discussion of difficult airway scenarios and error mitigation strategies. Presenters will also share experiences using airway recordings for scalable education of junior learners.
