Choosing Our Path Unapologetically: Defining Success, Reclaiming Identity, and Writing Our Own Story

Women physicians are often evaluated using external markers of success, including titles, timelines, productivity, and visibility. However, insights from leadership and organizational scholarship emphasize that meaningful and sustainable careers are more often defined by authenticity, intention, and alignment with personal values rather than adherence to prescribed paths. These perspectives challenge traditional academic norms and invite physicians to reconsider how success and leadership are defined.

This session will begin with a panel of diverse women leaders who will share experiences navigating nonlinear career paths, challenging cultural and institutional expectations, and reclaiming authorship of their professional journeys. Panelists will discuss how they have defined success on their own terms and aligned leadership decisions with personal priorities and values.

The second half of the session will transition to an interactive workshop in which participants will practice concrete skills, including redefining success metrics, reframing apologetic language, and drafting leadership narratives that reflect individual goals and identities. By combining candid storytelling with practical exercises, participants will leave with tools to confidently articulate their leadership trajectories and pursue careers shaped by intention rather than obligation.
